pristeen16 #2.... in colour

and finally.... coloured.

For your guffaws and sniggers... the rejected cover (rejected by me). In my defence, I was extremely tired...but it's very poor.

LINEWORK...

Well...here's the B&W linework for pristeen16 Cover #2.

I'm not inking these...it's just b5 pencil, and darkened in photoshop. I like the immediacy of the graphite... gives it a roughness.

I often manage to accidentally sanitize many half decent pictures while I'm inking, so by just pencilling I feel a lot freer to loosen up.

The cocktails help too. Thanks Ruby!

Revisiting a piece..

Well... I had to do pristeen16 cover #2 in a hurry last week for Previews... so I'm gonna redraw it tonight. I often redraw things 3 or 4 times.

I start with a thumbnail (about 4 by 5 cm) and scan it.

Blow it up to fit an IDW page, and tinker in Pshop.

Then I print A3 size, mix a martini, and draw under the influence with a 5B pencil.

A great piece of advice I got years ago from an Animation director was to look at your picture as a silhouette. It should hopefully look dynamic and understandable like that.

Well... anyway...martini time (In the interests of work you understand.)

pristeen16 #3 Cover

Well... all coloured up...

I was pretty resistant to learning photoshop, as like most of us... I'm terrified of things I don't understand... but over the last 2 years I've been tinkering I've really got to enjoy it.

I'm very lucky though... I have some great and extremely talented people I can call upon for advice, artistic and technical!

So a big thank you to Jock, Steve Pugh, Mick McMahon, and Garry Leach... who've all generously shared their insights, encouragement, ideas and advice.

I'm a very lucky boy.

Der Anaconda

Thought I'd share the crazy painting my lovely friend Brendan McCarthy gave me.

It's one of his old Artoons, and is huge...and slightly scary!

Still... keeps me working... I'm afraid he'll attack!

DERRY 2D FESTIVAL 2008.... survived!

A huge thank you to David Campbell for organizing my favourite Convention, the Derry 2D Comic Convention.

Just got back and was sent this link to a little BBC article.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/foyle_and_west/7440211.stm

It was a great show, and I got to sit next to Jock and marvel at his amazing sketches.

Charlie Adlard bravely sketched and took part in a number of talks....with no voice.... He is a machine!!!

Alan Martin and I made some great plans for Tankie over ...umm... a few Pints.

Nick Roche, Bob Byrne, Steve Mooney, Will Simpson, Garry Leach, Mark Stafford, Ilya, Laura Howell and Declan Shalvey blasted out some superb sketches for some lucky people!

Next year...get there! It's soooooo good!

... now...back to bed..
